Gwynne Penny

Art inspired by shapes, colours and emotions.

Gwynne has always been drawn to the sea, inspired by the shoreline.  The beach presents infinite possibilities – always changing with the passage of time, seasons, weather, and tide.

She interprets the world around her as shapes and colours, which in turn trigger a sense of wonder and complex emotions that she is always seeking new ways to capture in the work, whether it is digital photography, sketching, print making, drawing, painting or sculpture.

Gwynne’s recent work is a response to how the sea shapes the shoreline and the treasures that she discovers there.  She finds herself increasingly fascinated by the pattern of holes in the rocks, the spaces between skeins of seafoam, the way that a piece of seaweed is left stranded by the tide.

The shapes within these forms represent quiet moments, the duality of something being both present and absent at the same time which gives rise to complex emotions and feelings.

A piece of old fishing rope or plastic that has been shaped by the sea takes on a new life and Gwynne enjoys collecting and using man-made found materials from the beach in her work.

Working across multiple visual media including paint, assemblage sculpture, printmaking, digital photography and digital art enables Gwynne to explore and document her response to the world.  Her work is often infused with a strong sense of place, and she is equally at home working abstractly or realistically.

Inspired by the shoreline and the light in St Ives Bay in Cornwall.  She enjoys working in her home studio but loves taking a pop-up studio with her wherever she goes which can be as little as a pen and sketchbook or the contents of a small brown suitcase taken onto the beach with a painting or sculpture kit inside.
